Upcoming CAUSES Events

The College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences has some great events coming up next year, so please be sure to mark your calendars!

4-H Volunteer Leaders Training (January 11, 2014)
Learn how to support our youth in learning about leadership and opportunities that help them to meet their full potential. 4-H adult volunteers have the unique opportunity to make a significant and positive contribution to youth development by sharing learned skills, making a difference in their lives and leaving a legacy. Lead Abatement Workshop (Jan. 17 & 24, March 14 & 17, April 14 - 15)
CAUSES will be offering a Lead Abatement workshop in 2014, taught by Genell Anderson,
Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Architecture and Community Planning. The class, "Initial Lead-based Paint Abatement Worker Class," which will provide hands-on training, is geared toward hazardous materials removal workers. The two-day class will be offered January 17 and 24, March 14 and 17, and April 14 and 15 from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Contact Prof. Anderson at ganderson@udc.edu for more information.

Post-Oil City Exhibition and Workshops (January 30-31; February. 8, 15, and 21, 2014)
How can we envision the post-oil city of the future and what does such a city look like? Can cities really function without oil to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of their residents? Learn the answers to these questions and more by attending the Post-Oil City exhibition and panel workshops. The workshops will be embedded in the Post Oil Exhibit, a large exhibit that presents solutions for the Post-Oil City as envisioned by architects, planners, designers and engineers from ten different countries. A reception for the exhibit will be held Jan. 30 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and the first workshop on The City of the Future: Mobility and Energy featuring speakers from the U.S. and DC Government on will be held Jan. 31 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Three additional workshops will be held in February: 1) Feb. 8 - The Future of Urban Mobility featuring Volkswagen; 2) Feb. 15 - The City of the Future: Materials and Functionality featuring building materials producer REHAU; and Feb. 21 - The City of the Future: Water & Food Security featuring speakers from the U.S. and DC Government. National Capital Region Water Resources Symposium (April 4, 2014)
The National Capital Region Water Resources Symposium will be hosted next year on our Van Ness campus. The National Capital Region, encompassing D.C. and parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, has unique and challenging opportunities for sustainable management of water resources and water infrastructures. The region is the gateway to the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the U.S. and provides water for six million people. This one-day symposium will bring together experts from governmental agencies, academia, the private sector and non-profits to present and discuss challenges and opportunities for sustainable management of water resources and infrastructure in the region, as well as nationally and internationally. Sustainability and Social Enterprise Summit (Friday, April 18, 2014)
The University of the District of Columbia is bringing together thought-leaders in the District to discuss the current state of sustainability and social enterprise. The DC Sustainability and Social Enterprise Summit will bring together people and ideas related to sustainable urban development and entrepreneurship.
